“A Genuine Mistake”, ComPol on San Felipe Poisoning
An investigation into the accidental poisoning of a toddler in San Felipe Village on Tuesday of last week has led the Commissioner of Police to believe that the father of the child made a genuine mistake. As we reported, two year old Melanie Santos was found eating bread laced with Lannate, a pesticide, only moments after her father forty two-year-old Orlando placed the laced bread on top of the bed head to kill rats. Today, ComPol Williams told reporters that the matter is a complex one.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Obviously from what we have seen and heard, it seemingly is a genuine mistake on the part of the father, or can be looked at as a matter of negligence. I am sure that as a family they have suffered enough having to see their child going through what the child went through as a result of what happened. We really have to put a bit of humanity in how we approach the situation. I certainly would not want to see the parents having to go through another situation with this. It is certainly going to be hard on them. But, what we are doing is we are going to put the file together and we are going to send it to the DPP officer for guidance in terms of where we will go. It is not a matter for us to decide. Again, it is a complex issue, and when we have complex issues we normally refer it to the DPP for guidance and that is what we are doing with this case.”
