Be Alert of All Storms; Even Small Weather Systems Can Be Devastating

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is going to be an above-average one for hurricanes, and while Hurricane Agatha currently poses no threat to Belize, it is projected to cause major flooding as the Category 2 storm slams into the pacific coast of Mexico today as the first hurricane of 2022.  Chief Meteorologist, Ronald Gordon was on Open Your Eyes this morning and advised that as we enter the season, people need to be alert of the potential destructive force of all storms. One only needs to remember the damage that Tropical Storm Arthur caused in the Stann Creek Valley and its total destruction of the Kendall Bridge in June of 2008. Gordon warned that it doesn’t take a major a hurricane to cause devastation.

“It doesn’t take a major hurricane for there to be catastrophic damage and major flooding, so it’s certainly important that persons pay keen attention to any system that is coming our way, whether it’s a tropical wave, or a tropical depression because sometimes a tropical disturbance or a tropical wave can be very active and dump a tremendous amount of rainfall, which leads to significant flooding and can cause significant damage and even fatalities, if persons are not prepared”
