Climate Resilient Agriculture Should Include Food Security

Senator Kevin Herrera

Business Senator Kevin Herrera, in discussing the proposal, spoke on the need for government to carefully consider the interests of farmers and others in rural communities across the country.  He says that GOB should look closely at issues such as food security and poverty in the broader context of climate resilient agriculture.

Senator Kevin Herrera, Business Senator

“In terms of looking at the welfare of our rural population, in terms of looking at food security, in terms of looking at trying to keep that rural population out of poverty, I think it’s extremely important that we continue to look at climate resilient agriculture.  I think that it’s very timely; I’m hoping that we could do more of it in a much larger fashion because agriculture continues to be very important to our economy.  Sixty percent of our agriculture comes from four areas in agriculture and the other forty percent is a lot of other small farming areas; crops, livestock.  And so, if we don’t address the threats that climate change is bringing, I think we could be in a lot of trouble with respect to keeping persons out of poverty.  My request to the government, Madame President, is that in carrying out these projects and hopefully future projects in this respect, that we continue to keep it objective with respect to selection of how those monies must be spent.”
