Gilbert Swazo

While this is the first year that International Women in Maritime Day is being celebrated, already the theme and those in authority are calling for there to be gender-equality for the women in the sector, as well as for more women to be given fair opportunities to join that sector of work. Port Commissioner, retired Major Gilbert Swazo also joined that panel.

Major Gilbert Swazo (Ret’d), Port Commissioner

“In the twenty-first century, gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and a sustainable world. As we focus on this, the International Women in Maritime Day, we must recognize that there is tremendous work that needs to be done. Why? According to the worldwide statistics, women currently make up only two percent of the global maritime workforce and one point two percent of the global seafarers. This year’s theme for International Women in Maritime Day is: Training, Visibility, Recognition supports a barrier-free working environment, promotes the need for equal opportunities for women regardless of past traditional roles. It is about understanding and highlighting the important role that women play in a dynamic maritime industry and for fair treatment at all levels, but more so at the decision-making level.”
