“This years’ theme highlights the importance of protecting, supporting and investing in our nurses and in the honorable vocation they have chosen. To do so, we will inevitably strengthen health systems in Belize and likewise around the world. The theme points out what we already recognize; there is critical need to invest in our nurses and in nursing. We must provide them with every available resource including training and we must ensure that they are treated fairly and well, that their working conditions are conducive to wellness, that they are compensated properly, and that their rights are always protected. BY building a qualified, competent work force we shall transform our entire health system now and well into the future. Nurses are scientific professionals, but they are so much more. They are the frontline of our medical care. They are the guardians of those who are ill. They are the most important of service providers and are the literal life support systems for those who enter our health facilities. From birth to death through non communicable and infectious disease, mental health, chronic conditions in communities, and home care settings, nurses provide a lifeline full of care and compassion that we can get nowhere else.”
