Mayor Wagner Gives City Council Performance an A+

Mayor Bernard Wagner is approximately fourteen months into his second term of office. He was first elected in 2018. Two years into his first term, the council experienced its greatest setback as a result of COVID-19. The pandemic further amplified the financial difficulties Mayor Bernard Wagner and his team reportedly inherited from the previous council. The Mayor came under heavy public criticism during his 2021 campaign, as residents sought to take stock of his council’s performance. Now, fourteen months into his second term, we asked him to rate his council’s performance. Here is what he told us.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City Council

“Excellent, we out of our four years, listen we were faced with COVID for two years, so you have to put a sort of asterisk to our performance. We face COVID, and I continue to say any other Council who would have been running the city would have failed. It is because of our real competence in running the finances of the city made us not fire one person our City Hall through the entire COVID. Many of our other businesses, establishments terminated workers. You could recall prior to COVID, in March of 2020, the Belize City Council retained all its workers. Certainly, we said alright we will work along with you, we will go on half pay, but we never terminated anyone. We continue to meet our payrolls on a bi-weekly basis. Our payroll is nothing small. Our payroll is in the six figure mark every two weeks. Listen man, I believe that our Council’s performance over the past four years is very very good. Now, we have work to do in the remaining two years, in terms of really fulfilling those infrastructural commitments we made. We are confident we will be able to deal with many streets in the city for the next two years. That is our focus, our strategy.”
