Minister Perez Supports Bakers, Breaks down Costs

Andre Perez

Cabinet minister Andre Perez, whose family owns the largest bakery in San Pedro, says that he supports an increase in the cost of bread. He says that the acquisition cost of raw materials is up and bakers have been absorbing these costs for the past fifteen years. Minister Perez breaks down the reality for bakers.

Andre Perez, Cabinet Minister

“My company for the past five years has not been producing sixteen-ounce loaf of bread. Why? It’s because prudence would dictate in a business that if you are selling sixteen-ounce bread, it is not profitable. So at this point in time, government is beginning to look that the most affected bakers are the mom and pop bakeries around the corners here in this entire country. There are at least thirty of them. And what does that say is that the majority of their production – sixty, seventy, eighty percent of their production – is pretty much the sliced bread, sixteen-ounce. So, these are the people that are feeling it.  The prices of products have gone sky-high and forget or just note the price of flour; that is only one specific ingredient. But you are talking about yeast, shortening, all the conditioners, the bags that are sky-high, through the roof, three times. A plastic bag at one time used to run three cents, you are running around fourteen-fifteen cents per bag and you still expect the baker to sell a loaf bread for a dollar-fifty. Do not forget as well that there is still tradition that the bakers – a bread spoil at the shop, they change it. So that is another loss. So throw in all of these things, it is well justified.”
