FECTAB Objects to New Proposed Law to Expand Cruise Tourism

A new piece of legislation that will allow government to explore the prospect of expanding the cruise tourism sector to southern Belize is expected to be introduced in parliament on Friday.  According to FECTAB, a proposed bill will be brought before the House of Representatives tomorrow for first reading.  Once the bill has been read through, passed and ratified, it would allow for cruise lines to be able to dock at Harvest Caye.  Again, that is according to FECTAB whose concern with the piece of law is that it will effectively knock tour operators and guides who are established in Belize City out of business.

“The Ministry of Tourism, B.T.B., had been given permission to start exploring the possibilities of expanding cruise ship tourism down south. To the ordinary man that da wahn innocent lee statement, that noh sound like nothing weh warrant attention or no press conference. Why? That da wahn innocent statement, but that da how we da Belize we always get the sour end of the stick because when dehn put di innocent statement cross and when dehn pass di law, by di time di law pass ih done too late. Dehn schedule fi pass this and try fi put it eena law, I am hearing by this Friday. This Friday this wahn come up fi get pass eena law fi mek dehn start explore the possibilities of expanding the cruise ship port down south. I noh know if I wrong but I believe the learned Minister of Tourism represent the people from Pickstock. I correct or I wrong? Da from Pickstock, right?  Pickstock da wahn place eena Belize City? I noh know if the people of Belize City are aware or Mayor Bernard aware that every time wahn cruise ship pull up out deh you get paid one dollar U.S. per person, whether or not that person get off di ship. That da how di city council mek money. I noh know if di learned Minister of Tourism know that people from Pickstock work da Tourism Village.  I noh know if Cordel Hyde know that people from Mahogany Street work da Tourism Village. I noh know if Shyne Barrow weh bring Buju Banton know that people from Amara Avenue and Euphrates Avenue work da the Tourism Village. I noh know if the Belize City people, if unu eye open and know weh di ketch unu. I dah noh di smartest one eena di bunch but that di tell me that once da law pass, if any cruise ship weh di cohn da Belize right now, Belize City and dehn noh wahn cohn ya, dehn could go da Harvest Caye.”
