David Almendarez Dodges Questions About Proposed Law

When News Five pressed FECTAB President David Almendarez if he has gotten an opportunity to peruse the draft legislation, he abruptly chose not to respond to our question.  He does take umbrage, however, with the notion of relocating cruise tourism from its central location in Belize City.

Isani Cayetano

“Have you by any chance come by the draft legislation ahead of its presentation tomorrow?”

David Almendarez

“I don’t want to comment on that.”

Isani Cayetano

“There’s a specific reason why I am asking that question, if you had an opportunity to look at the draft legislation.”

David Almendarez

“I don’t want to comment on that.  You have your reason but I don’t want to comment on that.”

Isani Cayetano

“I understand and I respect the fact that you decline responding to the question.  The reason I am asking is because, and you will forgive me if I am coming at you a certain kind of way, right.  Whenever there seems to be any thought or consideration of either bringing onboard a new or another cruise port or expanding it’s when FECTAB raises its strongest objection to anything else outside of Belize City. It would almost seem as if though it’s only Belize City which has, as you rightly said, established the industry.  Belize City is the only one that is supposed to eat, it would come off that way.”

David Almendarez

“I’m glad you directed that question to us. When a person build ih farm, put di seed eena di ground, ih expect fi reap di benefits of that. Belize City has been good to the cruise ship tourism industry, so good in fact too good that it has risen a lot of eyebrows. I find it disrespectful that the member from Pickstock would find it so lucrative and attractive to move business out of his elected area.”
