G.C.F. Grants$900,000 to Address Climate Change Coastal Impacts

A ‘G.C.F.’ grant fund for nine hundred thousand dollars was also launched at today’s workshop. The grant fund is being directed towards identifying and finding solution to the effects of climate change along the coast of Belize. The Ministry of Economic Development is the National Designated Authority of G.C.F. in Belize. Dr. Osmond Martinez, the C.E.O. in the Ministry, says this is only the first phase in addressing the impacts of climate change.

“When we look at villages that almost use to be towns in the past, like Monkey River, that they are disappearing. There is no time to waste. We have to act now. Too much time has been wasted already and we have to deal with it. We have other coastal erosion problems in Corozal, Punta Gorda, areas like Barranco. But, also Dangriga, Hopkins, right from north to south is being affected. We need to mitigate and to solve those problems, because if not where will we be in fifty or seventy years from now, and what will our kids and grand kids inherit? I totally agree with the cry of our citizens to say our government has failed them. When you look at what was done between 2010 and 2013 was absolutely nothing. Now, within a year and a half I have, especially my Ministry, we said we have to get this project going. IN addition these are grants we are getting here. This is like I said in my presentation, this is our money. We are not asking G.C.F. for a favor or to help us. We are demanding of what is ours. Belize is on the top eight countries, most vulnerable to climate change. The impact is visible.”
