Prime Minister Jon Briceño Speaks on COVID Response in Caribbean at Global Summit

World leaders today participated in the second Global COVID-19 Summit, convened by United States President Joe Biden. At the event, Prime Minister John Briceño, as CARICOM Chair, spoke about the COVID-19 response and recovery efforts in the Caribbean. The Prime Minister said that many countries are experiencing a decline in serious infections and deaths as a result of significant advancements in the areas of the rapid development and use of vaccines, surveillance and testing. But he warned that the pandemic remains with us.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“Recent figures show a fifteen point four percent increase in new infections in the Caribbean. Death increased for the third consecutive week by thirty-nine point six percent as compared to the previous week. According to the WHO, reported cases in Africa are also rising. Many countries, including several in CARICOM, are far below the targeted seventy percent of the population vaccinated and are unlikely to get there by September. Low testing, lack of capacity in sequencing, lack of access to vaccines, and high costs of treatments slow the pace of ending the acute phase of the pandemic and create a global environment conducive to virus mutation. As well, it undermines the good progress that has been made. Presently, Latin America and the Caribbean has been the hardest hit region in the world, accounting for twenty percent of infections and thirty percent of deaths from the virus. This, while our region accounts for only eight percent of the global population.”
