Belize City Streets In Need of Repairs

Bernard Wagner

We also asked Mayor Wagner about the council’s plans for street repairs across the city. A question was put to him about the dilapidated state of Cemetery Road, one of the most trafficked stretches of road in the city. According to Mayor Wagner, while the council conducts repairs on Cemetery Road at times, the road is the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing.  He assured us that the council recognizes the need for street repairs, while noting that residents must also do their part by paying taxes.

Bernard Wagner, Mayor, Belize City Council

“We continue to recognize that streets are in some need of repairs. But, we need the cooperation of the resident. You can’t expect the city to fix your street when yon uh the pay the tax. It has to be recognition of that. If you nuh recognize that then we the head down wah bad road. Cemetery road, as you said, does not fall under our purview. From the bridge to all the highways are the Ministry of Works’. We do work on it sometimes because it runs in our city and we fell responsible for it as well. So, we continue to liaise with the Ministry of Works to ensure we can make the streets a little better and decent for our residents.”
