Blue Economy Ministry to Assess Erosion in Monkey River Village
Also in attendance was the chairman of Monkey River Village, Leonardo Castro. Earlier this year, we shared with you the reality on the ground where the small village is battling extinction due to erosion. Castro believes that today’s meeting was positive and that there will be some support coming to the village.
Leonardo Castro, Chairman, Monkey River Village
“Instead of stopping the effort, they’re continuing the efforts at Silk Caye. This is something we’ve been wanting for such a long time in Monkey River. I like how they move fast with it and we move fast to fix it. They are doing a short term project to fix it and then a long term project so we could have Silk Caye for a very long time. And that is all we’ve been asking for years. And I trust; the minister says that he is going to Monkey River and when they do their assessment for Monkey River, I hope that they do a short term project where we could stop houses from falling into the sea and then we can come up with a long term project that we could have Monkey River for a very long time just like Silk Caye.”
Erosion has also been happening out at Goff’s Caye which has officially been closed for the next six months as reclamation works is taking place there.
