Unvaccinated Faces Greatest COVID-19 Risks

Natalia Largaespada Beer

Two out of every three Belizeans eligible to be vaccinated have received at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The unvaccinated are at a greater risk of dying as a result of COVID-19, says Doctor Natalia Beer, the head of the Ministry of Health’s vaccination drive.  To emphasize this point, she shared a graph which shows that the unvaccinated are forty eight percent more likely to die of COVID-19, than the vaccinated. Here is what she told us.

Dr. Natalia Largaespada Beer, Ministry of Health

“To date we have a total of two hundred and eleven, three hundred and fifty five persons who have completed their primary series of COVID-19 vaccinations. That represents forty nine percent of the total population. Remember we are aiming at achieving eighty five percent coverage, so, we are pretty far away from that. But, when you look at the number of person eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines in Belize twelve years and older, we have received sixty eight point seven percent. In a nutshell, out of every three Belizeans that are eligible to be vaccinated, only two are vaccinated. That one that is not vaccinated is a susceptible person to get infected and continue with the transmission. After June first 2021, when we started with the second dose for the primary series of vaccines, we can consider that from that point, the risk of infection and death is equal for everyone, persons that are vaccinated and persons that are not vaccinated. So, what we did is look back at the data from June first 2021 to date. We used standard methods for age mortality rates, to compare the risks of death between being vaccinated or an unvaccinated person. As you can see there that COVID-19 mortality rate, or death, for every ten thousand people in Belize, for fully vaccinated is one pint nine, for persons that are not vaccinated it is forty eight point t forty two for every ten thousand person. So, that means that an unvaccinated person is twenty four times more likely to die compare to a completely vaccinate person.”
