Will G.O.B. Meet 10,000 House Promise?

Will G.O.B. meet the ten thousand-house threshold that they promised to the Belizean people? Minister of Housing Julius Espat says the simple answer is not in a five-year term. About a hundred and seventy houses have been contracted out with keys having been handed out to deserving persons, primarily single parent families and others in need. Minister Espat says while the ten thousand houses will not be achieved, every house is one more than the next.

“On the budget that we had last year, we only had a budget for about a hundred and twenty-five to a hundred and fifty houses, we ended up contracting out more than that. So we have contracted out one hundred and seventy houses; right now we are in the process of handing them over. Most of them are in the last phase or completed, but we haven’t officially handed them over. Yesterday we handed over three and today we will be handing over another three, four and we will continue the work. You should join us when we do it though because the reaction that we are getting from the people that are receiving these homes, it is emotional.”

“You dream for the stars and if you reach the moon then that’s also positive. You can’t put your eyes very low. You gotta put your sights very far and we did it purposely so that we could pressure ourselves. There are economic realities that we have to face, we understand that. We will not reach the ten thousand houses – I have been saying that to your boss from the day he asked me the first time – that will not be achieved because of the economical constraints; not because we can’t build them, but we go as the budget is provided to us. This year, they provided us a little more budget than they did last year and so we will continue doing the work.”
