Rodwell Ferguson Visits Silk Caye
Stann Creek West Area Representative Rodwell Ferguson journeyed to Silk Caye over the weekend at the invitation of Placencia residents who are concerned about the degradation of the island. Silk Caye has been in the news recently because a team led by Eworth Garbutt attempted to reclaim parts of the island that had been affected by erosion. While those efforts turned out to be controversial, government has pledged to address the matter. Minister Ferguson spoke with the residents who accompanied him to the island.

“I reached here this morning, maybe about a quarter to nine and I saw what has materialized over a period of years. Last week, you all tried to attempt to figure how you can fix it. That was a good initiative because what you did, you got the awareness of government to say, “Government, you need to do something urgently.” So when I went to cabinet last week, I told the cabinet that this is an urgent matter and the minister was instructed, the Minister of the Blue Economy, Andre Perez, to meet with you guys quickly and see how we can proceed. So I will go back to cabinet on Monday and tell them that this is my second thing I bring to cabinet again, please address the situation quickly. We have to restore back Silk Caye for the livelihood of our tour guides. I said today I had a tight schedule but when I got the call yesterday, I said, “Man, what a wah do? But right away I responded and I said I will come at least until eleven o’clock… this da fu di benefit of all Belizeans and foreigners alike. So thank you very much.”
