Belize Co-Hosting Tradewinds 2022

Kevin Bostick

Tradewinds 2022 will be held from May seventh to the twenty-first and will see approximately one thousand; eight hundred military men from twenty nations across the Caribbean and elsewhere converge in Belize and Mexico.  The Caribbean-focused regional security exercise is to develop military capacity in terms of land, air, sea, and cyber security of the participating forces from these countries.  U.S. Southern Command sponsors Tradewinds and, according to a release from the U.S. Embassy in Belize, this is the fifth time that Belize is hosting. It did back in 1998, then 2007, 2010 and 2015. But Mexico is co-hosting this year since land activities will be held in Belize, while Mexico is holding the naval exercise activities over the two weeks. SOUTHCOM’s Director of Exercises and Coalition Affairs Kevin Bostick spoke to News Five about the interagency exercise.

Kevin Bostick, SOUTHCOM Director of Exercises and Coalition Affairs

“Tradewinds is a combined joint and interagency exercise that has been happening in the Southcom and the western hemisphere for the last thirty-seven years you’ll have about nineteen hundred troops on the ground from twenty-two different countries. With that, they will be doing marine ops, water operations, patrolling, small unit ops, humanitarian assistance in disaster relief type training. A bunch of different things to make sure that we as a southern command partner with the countries in the region to build partner capacity and be able to better strengthen the partnerships between us. And in the end, one of the big things when you do this, it helps counter the transnational criminal organizations and the V.E.O. threats.”
