Strengthening Capacity of Countries to Intercept Transnational Crimes

Kevin Bostick

Aside from strengthening partnership within the region, chief among the objectives is to expand the region’s capacity to mitigate, plan for and respond to crises, including transnational crimes such as the illegal drug trade from South America into the U.S.  In the past year alone, we have been reporting on numerous drug plane tracks to this area; some landed in Belize, while others ended up in neighboring Guatemala and Mexico. SOUTHCOM Director of Exercises and Coalition Affairs Kevin Bostick says that following Tradewinds 2022, Belize will be better able to counter these threats.

“In Southern Command, we have three lines of efforts that our Command Sergeant Major have us as a team pretty much we live by day to day. Strengthening partnerships, building our team and then countering T.C.L. threats and with that strengthening partnership, the old proverb says unity in numbers. So nobody can do what needs to be done in the western hemisphere, in this region, by themselves. So when you are part of the team, then you can line up side by side and cross fertilize cross talk, cross communicate and help each other where you may not be able to stop those transnational criminal organizations and narco-trafficking threats by yourself. At the same token, when you try to build the team a lot of times it is focused at the SOUTHCOM team alone, but the second phase of that is when we walk away from here and start preparing for Tradewinds 2023, Belize will be better able to support themselves and also have built their partner network, made it even stronger to be able to help counter those threats.”
