A Massive Vigil for Slain Footballer Chris Rodriguez

Chris Rodriguez

Just before five p.m. today, police confirmed that they have formally arrested and charged twenty-year-old Fausto Teck for the crime of murder in the stabbing death of Chris Rodriguez. On Tuesday evening, the caretaker of the Norman Broaster Stadium got into a fight with Rodriguez, who was stabbed twice and died at the Western Regional Hospital. In the wake of the killing, on Wednesday evening, family and friends of the deceased, as well as members of the community came out in scores for a vigil.

A massive vigil was held on Wednesday night for slain footballer Chris Rodriguez. It commenced at his home in Santa Elena where hundreds of persons came out, including members of the community, his family and friends, as well as the World F.C. team for which he was a star defender. With candles in their hand, they paraded through the streets of the Twin Towns in the west as an expression of the loss that the community has experienced. The youth was stabbed multiple times on the evening of May third inside the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio by the caretaker of the sporting facility.

“We found out he was stabbed to the neck and a little bit under the ribcage and it punctured his lungs and that caused him short of breath. While he was in San Ignacio [Hospital], they actually put a tube inside him to breathe better and take out the bruise blood that he had in there. So they said he might need a surgery so they transport him to Belmopan hospital.”

Today, police charged Fausto Teck for the crime of murder. Immediately following the incident amateur video of Rodriguez running from the caretaker onto the pitch before collapsing was captured and posted online. But News Five has received additional video which shows that as the deceased and his seventeen-year-old cousin were leaving the stadium, Rodriguez went up to the Teck and punched him in the face. A fight ensues and it is believed that Rodriguez was stabbed during this time before he is seen running away. According to the family, the nineteen-year-old footballer was not known to be a troublemaker.

“I was training horse at the time when I got the call that Chris got stabbed. I was shocked, surprised that they called me for something like that because Chris is not a troublemaker. Chris avoids trouble; if you tell him something, he will walk away. For him to get stabbed something had to really went wrong.

I always told him from the beginning, I am proud of you son. You basically did it on your own ‘cause I always been out working and he basically did it on his own and I applaud Chris for that. He had a dream to become a great football player and he was chasing his dream, but it was cut short.”
