Promising Teen Footballer Stabbed to Death Out West

Chris Rodriguez

A nineteen-year-old athlete was stabbed multiple times on Tuesday night by a caretaker at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio. The incident has sent shockwaves across the Twin Towns and the rest of the country because Chris Rodriguez was a talented young footballer who was simply out honing his skill when the deadly incident occurred. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

He was an avid football player, having trained with the U19 national football team and was on the verge of being recruited by the Verdes Football Club. But on Tuesday evening, while in the company of his seventeen-year-old cousin at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio, Chris Rodriguez was stabbed multiple times by Fausto Teck, a caretaker of the stadium. Manuel Rodriguez says he was at work when he got the dreadful call about his son.

Manuel Rodriguez, Father of Deceased

“I was training horse at the time when I got the call that Chris got stabbed. I was shocked, surprised that they called me for something like that because Chris is not a troublemaker. Chris avoids trouble; if you tell him something, he will walk away. For him to get stabbed something had to really went wrong. We found out he was stabbed to the neck and a little bit under the ribcage and it punctured his lungs and that caused him short of breath. While he was in San Ignacio [Hospital], they actually put a tube inside him to breathe better and take out the bruise blood that he had in there. So they said he might need a surgery so they transport him to Belmopan hospital.”

Chris died at the Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan, shortly after one a.m. today. Amateur footage was captured of Chris running onto the pitch with Teck in pursuit, even after being stabbed. The incident happened in the presence of many who witnessed the deadly encounter.  They have been left traumatized. Carlos Rodriguez’s son, Keon, was also with Chris at the time. He was too shaken up to speak, but his father recounted what led to the fatal stabbing.

“This guy approached them and tell them if they had any ticket to be on the grounds to play and they said no. Then this guy tell them you guys need to leave. So Chris said why do we need to pay for practicing. So my son said right now we are leaving. We are just going to take off our jerseys and we are going to leave. So when they were walking out the guy was standing at the entrance of the gate and he was telling Chris that he is the one that owns that field and if he wants, he can make them come back and if he wants he can make them never to come in that stadium.”

“How is your son doing?”

Carlos Rodriguez

“He is very traumatized, he don’t want to come out from the house and he is crying. I am trying to talk to him, but he don’t want to hear because he blame himself that maybe he coulda mi try do something. But I said maybe if he tried to intervene,  maybe he would be the guy to get stabbed.”

Manuel Rodriguez

“You already stabbed this guy twice and then Chris running for his life. I would if someone is chasing me with a machete or a knife, I would run for my life. And then you chasing me behind, that means you really want to finish me. You have no remorse and you really want to remove me from this world.”

The murder of the teenager is yet another tragedy for the family. Back in April of 2016, his mother and aunt were killed in a vicious double murder in Santa Elena. Miriam Mai and Daisy Miralda, who is Chris’ mother, were shot dead by Mai’s ex-common-law husband Andy Bustillos inside Betty’s Salon. Manuel Rodriguez says that the family has still not healed from that double murder and now has to deal with another loss.

Manuel Rodriguez

“Not only his mother, [but] his aunt as well, both of them. It was rough for me as well. Living with your common-law and then they just take her away from you and the kids are much smaller and then you have to raise as a single father.”

The family is calling for justice to prevail. By all accounts the deceased had a future in football in Belize.

“I neva want believe dah him. It just touched me that this innocent lee young bwai weh just full ah talent. I dah like why? Why him. I am just hurted. He wasn’t out at a bar. He was at the stadium where he came everyday to do the stuff that he loved. I noh understand, like it noh safe anymore.”

Manuel Rodriguez

“That was his dream. He didn’t follow my footsteps as a jockey or horse training. He had his own goal and his own dream and I totally supported Chris. It’s sad that he had to pass away in that manner. I always told him from the beginning, I am proud of you son. You basically did it on your own cause I always been out working and he basically did it on his own and I applaud Chris for that. He had a dream to become a great football player and he was chasing his dream, but it was cut short.”
