Fisheries Department Comments on Illegal South Silk Caye Reclamation

The Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation in a late afternoon release confirmed that the organizers of the South Silk Caye reclamation exercise did not have the proper license or authorization to carry out their activity. The ministry says it was made aware of the planned reclamation activities on South Silk Caye.  Notwithstanding efforts by the Fisheries Department and the coast guard to stop the process from continuing, the organizers refused to cease the work. The Fisheries Department expressed concern over the activities that transpired, noting that they have been working with co-managers of the Marine Protected Area System to address the threats in a manner that is strategic and environmentally safe. According to the department, this case is of special concern because the site being altered is within a high biodiversity conservation zone where only non-extractive use is allowed. The Ministry and the Fisheries Department says it will be engaging the co-managers of the marine reserve, as well as the community leaders to seek the most expeditious but legally valid approach in addressing the issue of non-compliance and moving forward with the completion of the restoration work.
