Disciplinary Charges for Officer in Viral Video

There is yet another video that is making its rounds on social media, which shows the assault of a civilian by a police officer.  It happened over the weekend on Saint Thomas Street. In the video, the officer advances towards the individual recording him using expletives and preventing him from recording an incident involving his brother and the officer. The video brings into sharp focus a most recent incident at the Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airstrip in which a civilian was also assaulted by a police officer. Today, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood told the media that the officer in this incident over the weekend is being dealt with.

“I saw that video and I can assure you that an investigation was launched immediately. We know that the officer in that video is from Belize City and the precinct commander has been tasked to investigate that properly. What we are hoping for is that the person in that video would come forward and give us a formal report. But I can tell you on our side, one, our legal office has already made certain directives and that officer will be dealt with internally regardless if we have a virtual complainant or not. We have been singing to our officers for quite some time that it is okay if people believe that they want to video the police doing their job. If you are doing your job at the highest level of professionalism, you should have no problem with it and at the end of the day, if you go against what we consider one of the department’s policies, then you will be dealt with internally, regardless.”
