Increase in Cost of Bread is Illegal

The cost of goods has gone up considerably, due to various factors and we’ve been reporting on some of those cases. But recently, there was a circular proposing an increase in the cost of bread. News Five has confirmed that at some stores across the city and elsewhere, the cost of a sixteen-ounce pack of bread has increased to two dollars and fifty cents. With the cost of living already high, it is unthinkable that this basic commodity has also gone up in price. Today, Cabinet Minister Francis Fonseca told the media that this product is regulated and it is illegal for the cost to have been increased.

“Cabinet asked the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security to bring a paper next week on the issue so that we can have a substantive discussion and look at the matter.”

“Sir several bakeries, grocery stores have already begun to sell their sixteen-ounce sliced pack bread at two dollars and fifty cents. What’s your comment on that?”

Francis Fonseca

“They are in absolutely contravention of the law. It is illegal. It’s illegal. They have no authority to do that. Bread is a controlled price substance so they have no authority to do that. And until the law is changed, until there is some approval for the price to change, they are in violation of the law.”
