8 New COVID Deaths – Ministry of Health Explains

On Monday, the Daily COVID-19 Report of the Ministry of Health and Wellness shared that there were only fourteen new confirmed cases and that active cases are as low as one hundred and twenty-eight. While the daily positivity was at one point one percent with eleven new recoveries, it was the eight new COVID-related deaths that sent shockwaves across the country. Today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness says that for the past two months, the Epidemiology Unit has been reviewing deaths that occurred during the pandemic to ensure that the figures are accurate. Doctor Russell Manzanero explains how the additional COVID-related deaths are being recorded.

“In this regard, what you see are those perhaps deaths that were seen at the private sector or the public sector in the past. We’ve been getting death certificates of those individuals who died at home, those sudden deaths, unexpected deaths or even violent deaths like R.T.A.s and those are the ones that we need to review. Many times for example in road traffic accidents or homicides, when those happen, by protocol they might be swabbed and you get a positive result for COVID. Mind you that when you fill out those death certificates, many times you might find that the underlying cause is also COVID, which is not entirely true. Someone who dies from trauma or a violent manner, then those are not contributed or underlying from COVID; these are mainly due to the trauma that existed there. So that is in part some of the revision that we are doing. So I guess that’s what you have been seeing that some of these deaths are being recorded in that manner. We do have an additional number of deaths that we are reviewing at the moment. I believe it is over fifty plus deaths and these are also going to go through that screening process and that validation process.”
