Water Taxi Operators Must Apply for Rate Increases with Port Authority
According to Commissioner Swaso, there is a mechanism in place for water taxi operators to seek a justifiable increase in fares, if deemed necessary. But, any fare above what has been approved and published is illegal and unlawful.
Major Gilbert Swaso, Commissioner, Belize Port Authority
“There is a process that if the water taxi operator who has a permit deems it necessary for whatever reason as it relates to inflation, the increase of fuel, whatever reason, then obviously there is due cause to approach the Port Authority justifying the need for that increase and then demonstrate the methodology that you use to justify that raise. The Port Authority will certainly look at the merits of that case in a particular. We will do our due diligence then approve and disapprove. Once we approve they have again all obligation top to ensure the new rates are published in a visible place.”
