Minister of Home Affairs and Others Respond to Police Incident
The response to the video that circulated over the weekend has been swift. The Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, issued a statement saying his administration prides itself in “deliberately and decisively disrupting the long standing culture of police abuse in whatever form it takes, whether verbal of physical.” Minister Musa says swift action will be taken. A statement from The Human Rights Commission says they believe the situation could have been handled differently by the police. The release says the officer could have approached the individual respectfully, without the use of profanity, and then, if there was resistance, use proportionate force. The Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow also spoke out, saying a police officer should never conduct themselves in this apparently unprofessional manner when dealing with the public. He went on to say that the Opposition condemns any abuse of the public by those sworn to serve.
