Mexico and Guatemala Both Want Belizean Cattle

Prime Minister John Briceño says Guatemala and Mexico are competing for Belize’s cattle. PM Briceño noted that the competition will provide the capital needed for expanding the industry in Belize.

“I am a cattle farmer also; a cattle rancher so what is being done here is good for me and my brother Jaime. I remember many years ago when I told Jaime let us get into cattle ranching. He seh, weh we know about cattle. I said, we are going to learn. For a number of years Jaime is always saying, we can’t sell the cattle, we can’t sell the cattle. Now, finally we are coming to the point where they seem to have worked out the kinks for us to have a good market, a market where we have two competing groups, Guatemala and Mexico. By setting up that kind of competition, it allows for our Belizean ranchers to get a better price. That has always been the biggest problem. Cattle ranching require a lot of capital and it is a long term investment. If you do not have the cash flow, most farmers or ranchers cannot afford it. What makes me so excited about what I am seeing here today is that I am seeing plan Belize in action. In PlanBelize there are a lot of ideas we put together. We believe if we could get all of these pieces in place, as one big picture, we can really address the fundamental problems we are facing in this country.”
