The Mighty Lord Rhaburn Turns 86

Gerald Rhaburn

Belize’s musical legend, the Mighty Lord Rhaburn celebrated his eighty-sixth birthday on Thursday. It’s quite an achievement for an artist who has spent the better part of seven decades as a preeminent figure in Caribbean music. Earlier today, News Five’s Isani Cayetano sat with the Belizean icon whose given name is Gerald Rhaburn. He spoke about the milestone in his life, as well as his vision for the younger generation of Belizean talent.

“I have to say that reaching the age of eighty-six, it means a lot to me because this birthday, in the music business, I started from I was fifteen, I mean eight when I was eight, and it makes seven decades of music. My life, I have already lived three scores and ten. So all in all, I gotta thank the Almighty God and I think I am being blessed to live this long. When I go to Bird’s Isle, yoh could call it wahn ol’ school set ah old men who get together, give jokes, cuss bad word, talk bout sex, talk bout all kinda thing so when you come around there you have to be over fifty to sit around that table. But you know, we invite youths too, but the idea is that we noh decide fi goh out like some grumpy old man. We could drive away stress and noh sihdown eena wahn corner and believe that well now, this da di end of it. We wahn drive until the good Lord call we. See, and this was organized by Mr. Henry Young. We now must understand right, that we old. The youths dehn got wahn style fi tell yoh, da fu we turn now. But ah wonder weh dehn wahn do with fu dehn turn, go out deh go shoot people? That noh di give me wahn bright feeling at all. I just hope that before a leff, all this killing and thing noh when stop.”
