Scrub Board is Gunned Down on Wilson Street

Edward Saldano

Shortly after eight p.m. on Wednesday, a volley of gunshots disturbed the silence near Sister Cecilia’s Home for the Elderly. When the gunfire subsided, a waterfront worker laid motionless on Wilson Street and not far away from his bullet-riddled body was the bicycle he was riding. Investigators are still trying to piece together what led to the ruthless killing and whether Edward Saldano’s son may have been the intended target.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A well-known stevedore was executed in Belize City on Wednesday night as he rode his bicycle along Wilson Street. Edward Saldano, Scrub Board, as everyone knew him, was in the vicinity of the B.W.S. reservoir when a sports utility vehicle drove up to him. Inside was a pair of men who alighted the Nissan Murano and took aim at him. Multiple gunshots were fired in Saldano’s direction.

“Sometime around 8:30 [p.m.], police responded to a scene not too far from the WASA water tank on Wilson Street where they saw the motionless body of fifty-five-year-old Edward Saldano, a Belizean stevedore and a bicycle not too far from him, his body.  Initial investigation has revealed that he was riding on that street when he was approached by a dark color S.U.V. when the occupants exited and fired a barrage of bullets in his direction.”

Saldano perished on the scene. According to Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, police are looking for two men who are no strangers to the law in connection with the deadly assault.

Fitzroy Yearwood

“We know that we are looking for two persons known to the police and hopefully we can encourage persons that live on that very narrow street to share with the investigators what they may have seen occur leading up to Mr. Saldano’s death.”

“Is it believed that Mr. Saldano was targeted because of his son who is currently on the run from the law?”

Fitzroy Yearwood

“Well, I wouldn’t want to say that because he is on the run from the law and I don’t believe any law enforcement officer may have had anything to do with what took place with Mr. Saldano last night. I just want to make it very clear that Edward Saldano Sr. and Edward Saldano Jr. are two different persons and as much as I know about the father, he was a hardworking person.”

The police department is careful not to make any unsubstantiated associations between the murder of Saldano and his namesake son who is a fugitive of the law; however, they are also not ruling out the possibility that the father may have been a victim of circumstance.

Fitzroy Yearwood

“We would have to establish motive in order for us to say that in a definite form and so far we haven’t established motive, but what we can say is that with that excessive amount of bullets being fired at him, they wanted to make sure that he died. What his son may have done in the streets could be elements, but I still wouldn’t want to lean towards that and I honestly believe that someone just took advantage of Edward Saldano Sr. and took away his life unjustly.”
