Belize Welcomes Vice President of Liberia, Dr. Jewel Taylor

Although Liberia and Belize are geographically thousands of miles apart, the Vice President of Liberia is hoping our countries can forge ties strong enough that will advance the development of women in both countries. Dr. Jewel Taylor arrived in Belize on Wednesday afternoon as a special guest of the Mayor of Belmopan, Sharon Palacio. Dr. Taylor will deliver the keynote address at the first ever She-For-She Champions World Summit. The two-day event, with delegates from all over the world, commemorates International Women’s Month. News Five was on hand when the motorcade with Dr. Taylor arrived at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Hotel from the Philip Goldson International Airport. We asked what her message will be to her audience.

“First, women are as capable as men but we have to work on being able to do the things that we set our hearts to do and that the desires of our hearts can be met by commitment and hard work and that working together, all things are possible.”

“Politics being what it is – I’m sure you’re very familiar with it, being a woman in politics yourself and a successful one at that – it doesn’t really place women – or actually the odds are stacked highly against them. What would your message be for female politicians who are striving for that successful vote?”

Dr. Jewel Taylor

“It’s not an easy field, but it can be overcome. Liberia has an amazing story of electing the first democratically-elected female president of Africa, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. I’m the first female Vice President of my country, so there are a lot of experiences we can share that if you have a passion to be a change-maker, if you want to make a difference in the scheme of things, then politics is where the decisions are made and a woman shouldn’t be left out of any field. We bring our best to the table wherever we find ourselves.”
