Minister of Health Outlines Changes to Mask Mandate

Kevin Bernard

It was a much anticipated Statutory Instrument, with hopes for major changes to COVID regulations. Significantly, the March first amended S.I. did remove the curfew that has been in place for almost two years now. It also made a slight change to the mask mandate. Combing through the legislation, it becomes clear that at the moment there is only one alteration for mask wearing and that is in outdoor spaces. This morning on Channel Five’s Open Your Eyes, Minister of Health Kevin Bernard reminded Belizeans of all of the other places they do have to continue wearing their masks.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health & Wellness

“We have had several changes in the time for curfew. We felt that it has served its purpose. That was the first decision that was made, that we have to lift the curfew. The other one is the issue of the mask. The decision was made that masks would only be required if you are outdoors. I just want to point out the section of the SI which states when you need to wear your mask. The mask must be worn for any gathering when you are indoors, or in a closed space. For example, you go into a church, a church service, a wedding ceremony, or any celebration, a funeral service, wake or repast. If you are attending a social club event, including those fraternal societies, a civil association, or organization of a private club. Or any other reception. And as well if you are accessing a government building, or office, including offices of statutory bodies, business offices shops, stores, supermarkets, hardware stores, or any other business. And importantly, public transportation.”
