The Society for the Promotion of Education and Research is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary by holding an exhibition of the work they have done from 1969 to 1999. At the open day, three new educational reports produced by SPEAR were launched. Adele Catzim, SPEAR’s Chairperson says although the public may be aware of the organization they may not be familiar with their work.

“We know that the public is aware of our political reform campaign and they are aware of SPEAR’s initiative to organize civil society but we think that many people are still unaware of all the other work that we do.

We have several publications on sale. We want people to see that we cater to a wide range of audiences, a wide range of people because our publication goes from the very popular which is the publication, “Democracy in Crisis” and the “Democratization of the Constitution” to very academic publications like SPEAR Reports.

We also have a community development program that many people don’t know about. There are other programs that have come and gone throughout the years; Literacy for example. Several symposiums and forums that we have had that people don’t know about or even if they know about it they have forgotten.”

On Saturday, SPEAR will hold its annual general meeting. Among the invited guests will be Prime Minister Said Musa, who is one of the original founders of SPEAR. The meeting takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at SPEAR’s office at 38 Freetown Road.
