Time for a New Cycling Federation Executive?

An extraordinary general meeting is being requested by members of the Cycling Federation of Belize in an attempt to elect a new executive. This afternoon, Tariq Cano and Alexi Ordonez, having tendered a copy of the requisition to the National Sports Council, convened a brief question and answer session with the media.  According to Cano, elections were to have been held in 2021. For whatever reason, that activity was never held.

“We have given the current cycling federation body a requisition form signed by cyclists requesting for an annual general meeting initially to call an election.  Now this has to be done by having at least fifteen signatures which we have doubled, from the cycling community, in support of having an early election. So with that, we want to see how best we can move forward and initiate the movement of getting cycling forward. Myself, Tariq Cano, is no stranger to the sport of cycling. Over the past three years we’ve been pushing cycling both locally and internationally and getting the younger generation educated on a wide scale. So this venture to have the election called is just so we could get the ball rolling and we could get more done for cycling in Belize. Cycling has been on a downfall for the past five years, you could say. Our youths in cycling have dwindled from my days which was about seventy riders to now, you don’t even have ten riders lining up for classics, and that’s the future of the sport. You have these young athletes, ten of them, and out of that ten maybe only five will transition into elite riders and then what happens to the generation of cyclists, it’s dwindling. It’s dying off. The females are also dying off and we’re trying to revive that. Myself, Mr. Ordonez here, and his family and a few others have pushed in the past three years to try and see how best we could revive back the sport.”
