Is G.O.B. Committed to Honoring Maya Land Rights?

The actions taken by the Briceño administration, says Coc, is a clear indication that government is not serious about carrying out the Maya land rights.

Cristina Coc

Cristina Coc, Spokesperson, M.L.A./T.A.A.

“These actions, and this is what is important for the Government of Belize to understand, as the president has already so eloquently stated, this process further erodes the trust and the confidence of the Maya people in this government. It tells us that the government is not genuinely committed to the implementation of the Maya land rights. For three decades now, we have struggled against these injustices, we have struggled in the margins, yet we plant seeds in the margins hoping that our government would do good to one of the first peoples on this land, the Maya people.  But they insist on a top down approach, seven years after the confirmation of our rights we continue to be ambushed and disrespected and the latest assault has been the complete attack of our governance system, the complete attempt to erase the Toledo Alcaldes Association, our collective institution here among our forty-one Maya villages. This is an attempt by the government to overthrow our traditional governance system.”
