BSI Addresses Ban on Everaldo Uk

William Neal

In other news from the sugar cane belt, B.S.I. has placed a permanent ban on Everaldo Uk, the putative president of the Corozal Sugar Cane Producer Association. A letter to Uk from B.S.I.’s attorney dated January eighteenth accuses him of physically attacking Vladimir Puck and Jaime Norega with a metal object on B.S.I.’s property. The letter notes that the attack was witnessed by B.S.I.’s Security Personnel and captured by B.S.I.’s security cameras.  He is now prohibited from entering the compound. In response, the Belize Sugar Cane Producers issued an appeal for this to be rescinded, or applied to all who perpetrated acts of violence in contravention of its policy, saying Uk was singled out. B.S.I. says it must maintain the safety of all, and Uk may not be the only one to be banned.

William Neal, Communications, A.S.R./B.S.I.

“When to comes to any kind of work place violence, we have a zero tolerance for that. It is important that all stakeholders feel safe when they come on our property. We assume responsibility actually for their safety. It is a matter of ensuring that farmers have a clear, or all stakeholders have clear message from B.S.I, that it will not be tolerated. What we witnessed at the start of the crop this year is something that we don’t want to see an increase in. And, we definitely want to discourage farmers from engaging in any type of violence and altercation. While we have banned the individual, we have not banned access to the mill. So, they are still able to have others deliver their cane to the mill. But, they cannot enter our premises, because we want to ensure that everyone, including our employees, including other farmers, including other associations, feel safe as they conduct business on our premises. There is a letter issued to the individual that is banned, and you have within a week or so, you can make an appeal. And, we do have an internal process that deals with that appeal. While Mr. Uk was the first person banned, we are continuing with our investigations, and we are using our close circuit video footage to make sure we identify the individuals. It was very clear that Mr. Uk was one of the main perpetrators, and that is why that action was taken at this juncture.”
