Dimes is Executed inside Matilda’s Mini Mart

Leslie Gillett

The spate of gun violence over the weekend extended to Burrell Boom Village on Friday evening where a shopkeeper, believed to have been actively involved with a Belize City gang, was dispatched in a volley of gunshots.  It is unclear whether the murder of Leslie Gillett was an act of reprisal for the violent occurrence that took place earlier in the day, or if it is the result of a previous incident that has haunted him for the past two years.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

“In my honest opinion, from the talking me and my brother [did] I could almost [be] sure that he has no involvement with what they actually took his life for.”

A deadly spray of bullets inside his place of business ended the life of thirty-seven-year-old Leslie Gillett.  The incident happened on Friday evening in Burrell Boom Village.  Dimes, as Gillett is popularly known, was tending to customers inside Matilda’s Mini Mart.  The next group that entered the establishment pretended that they were there to make a purchase.

“An unknown gunman approached him, brought him under fire and he was fatally injured. We have several persons being questioned in connection with this and hopefully the information that the investigators have gathered so far will become useful that could lead up to some form of detention and hopefully and arrest.”

As many as twenty-one police markers littered the area where the shooting happened.  In November 2021, Matilda’s was also the location of a double homicide where twenty-one-year-old Kendra Miguel and her coworker, Dennis Brown, were both cut down in a hail of bullets.  Many believe that the fatal attack on his employees several months ago was actually meant for him.

“We have interviewed some persons that believe so, but we can’t go just on belief.  We at the police department have to try to stick to the facts and rely on that to try to bring some form of clarity, but people in the village are rumoring that.  I will not deny that, but we here cannot go on rumors.”

What is a likely motive is a murder that also happened here in Burrell Boom two years ago when Aaron Baptist, a village councilor was gunned down inside a makeshift music studio.  Since then, Gillett has been marked for death.

Gilbert Gillett

“A previous murder occurred about two years ago and that is what they are actually putting blame on him for. But from talking to him and the talks we had and the closest we were, my brother, from what he said, he had no involvement in it.”

Dimes’ murder happened just several hours after the gangland execution of Joseph “Tanga” James in Belize City, however, investigators are unable to make a connection between the two incidents.

Fitzroy Yearwood

“In the Gillett murder, we know that previously two persons lost their lives at that same location. So for us to say that it’s some form of retaliation for James, it would be neither here nor there.”

Gillett’s older sibling was in Bermudian Landing on Friday when he received word of the armed assault on his brother.

Gilbert Gillett

“I was in another village, I was all the way in Bermudian Landing doing some work, while I got the news that there was some shooting over at my brother’s shop. So that’s all I really got to know about it.”

Isani Cayetano

“So you left from Bermudian Landing to return here to Burrell Boom to inquire what happened. What did you see or what did you hear upon arrival?”

Gilbert Gillett

“Alright, when I reached here at Boom, when I reached, I saw the police vehicle.  I saw a crowd outside and thing like that and I was made to understand that they took my brother’s life.”
