Mediating Weekend Murders: Compol Says Gangs Know What to do to Stop Violence
Was the spate of murders going into the weekend all gang-related and linked to each other? Commissioner of Police Chester Williams responded to the question, saying that over the weekend, there was mediation to address the gun violence.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, B.P.D.
“There was not a gang truce this weekend. What happened, with an attempt to stop the bleeding that we’re seeing on the streets of Belize City, the L.I.U. brought together the different gang leaders and had a meeting with them. I was invited to that meeting and I told them that I was not going to attend the meeting because I had no intention to meet with them. I simply told L.I.U. to inform the gang members that if it is they continue with their problem, I will know what to do to address the issues. And so that meeting was had and I was told that the gang members gave the commitment that certain things would occur and we are waiting to see how things move on from there.”
