ComPol: Crime is All of Our Business

Over the last week, there have been at least four murders in the Belize District.  But, at the Belize Police Department’s weekly media briefing today, Police Commissioner Chester Williams said that the public can play a more vital role in not only deterring but also solving crime.

“I don’t think anyone can say that there’s nothing being done by the Police and even perhaps, the government in trying to address the issues of our youths on the streets, particularly in Belize City. Yes, from time to time, we’re going to have these flare-ups and we always try our best to see what we can do to bring it under control and I think that you all can see for yourselves that yes, quickly, we were able to bring the situation under control. Since Saturday, we have not seen any other incident occur. But when we look at the whole issue of these murders, I think we need to look beyond the police because it is not that the police would know that someone is going to commit a murder if we just sit on our laurels and do nothing. But rather, it goes to show that the nature of our society is changing. Our people are becoming more and more violent. It is something that we have to address holistically and through other agencies, that is what we have been trying to work on. But be that as it may, there’s still always going to be those persons who are not going to tow the line that we would want them to tow, and would go out and do things that are contrary to what we are trying to achieve. So that is where the citizenry must play their part in ensuring that when they see something they say something so that we can act accordingly. I’m happy to say that over the weekend we had three different instances where police stop and search (operations) led to the detention and arrest of three separate individuals with loaded firearms. These are persons who we believe were going to carry out murders but they were interrupted or their act was foiled by the police actions and presence on the streets.”
