Port Authority Urges Both Parties to Resolve the Issue

While Commissioner Swaso says the Belize Port Authority is hoping both parties will resolve this issue sooner rather than later, other avenues are being considered to ensure operations continue. He says the Port Authority is urging both parties to utilize the legal course for disputes of this nature.

“We are impressing upon all the parties, particularly the Port of Belize Limited and the C.W.U., to look at the merits and the demerits from an operational standpoint. And, for them to seriously consider compartmentalizing the issue, because there is an operation issue, and there is a legal issue. I would want to suggest, for us to allow the process to work but do not create the impasse, let the impasse create any further delays or economic hardship on all the parties concerned, including the country. We do have other courses open. I do not want to get into the details in that regard. But, we are hopeful the parties will come to a resolution as soon as possible, because as I said, the longer this goes it does not benefit anyone at all.”

Paul Lopez

“Can the Port Authority hire labor, alternate labor, to continue operations?”

“We want to do things in very responsible manner. Our hope is that all parties is very much aware the negative implications and positive implications of this.”
