Police Department Hit Hard by COVID; Placencia Most Severely
The Omicron contagion that has spread across almost every corner of the country has not spared the Belize Police Department. Coupled with the spike in murders since last Friday, the department also has to cope with a shortage of close to three hundred of its own officers who are infected with the virus. Today Commissioner Williams explained how they are able to serve and protect with so many of their members out sick.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police, B.P.D.
“The COVID is significantly affecting us as a department but we are still doing our best to see how we can spread ourselves across the country with a view to ensure that we provide the level of security that our people expect from us. If we see numbers are going too low then we would look at sending in additional officers to a particular area. Right now I can tell you that Placencia is one of the most affected of all our stations. I think they are operating at almost fifty percent strength, but despite that, they are still doing what they can to keep the peninsula safe.”
