C.W.U. Says G.O.B. Should Mediate, Not Take Side of Employer

And, “Mose” Hyde had a message for the state when we asked him for a comment. He contends that the state’s action is a provocation to the stevedores currently engaged in industrial action.

“That is not their role. That is not in their purview. They are not in the business of breaking the back of a legitimate industrial action. They have a responsibility indeed to guide, to mediate the impasse that we have there, but not to take it on themselves to protect the interest of the employer. That is a private interest, a receivership no less, and you decided that you are going to put our security forces out there? That is outrageous. A lot of what is involved is standing by and looking to see what happens now. We have gone on the record to the state to say this is not how this is to be played out. B.D.F. soldiers are not to be placed on the pier head to the work of the stevedores. We have already put that on record. That is not only outrageous, that is serious provocation, because what you are saying to these guys is, guess what, you have your gripes, you have your issues. We don’t want to hear that. If you don’t work, the state is going to do it on behalf of a private entity? Nah man, it can’t work like that man, it cannot work like that.”
