C.E.O. Says There is Queue for Hiring, Strike during Tribunal is Illegal

And so, as C.E.O. Lane puts it, industrial action at the Port is bad for business. But, the stevedores’ main concern is getting their sugar separation payment. They are demanding this as compensation for the Belize Sugar Industry’s move to the Big Creek Port. Tensions were already high on Thursday when the management at Port refused to rehire two crane operators recommended by the general foremen. C.E.O. Lane gave P.B.L.’s position on that issue.

“We have a fully agreed standard process which is largely documented in the CBA which governs how to we un-hire new workers, and how do we promote workers through the system. There are many stevedores in line, in queue, and there is an order and that needs to be followed. Sugar redundancy doesn’t exist. It is a myth that is created by the union, and it is presently harming the people that they are supposed to be representing. No stevedore is being made redundant from Port of Belize. There is a tribunal in progress which the union continuously tries to disrupt, and walk away from, or simply don’t turn up for, and that is where that discussion should be had. A strike in the middle of this tribunal is illegal. That means I can put the fourteen stevedores that were registered to work yesterday through the disciplinary process, as per the CBA. But, I will not do that, because this is not the stevedore’s fault. This is not the stevedore’s doing. This is the creation of the Christian Workers Union, and they have to take full responsibility for now what will be a drying up of inbound supply chain, the failure to ship Belizean shippers export cargo. This will have ramifications in the community, competitiveness for Belize and the global environment. What is going on here is nothing short of lunacy.”
