PM Says Not So Fast on Belize City Garbage Tax

The proposal has frequently come up, even under previous City Councils, that the Belize City Council should charge a garbage tax. It is something that the current Mayor, Bernard Wagner, has also said he supports and would move to implement. But, Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters this week that it is something he will have to look at first.

“It’s something that we would have to take a very hard look at before we decide whether we will support a garbage tax, but again, we need to add that they were elected so we can’t tell them don’t do it or do it. That’s something that the Council would have to decide. Whether we would support it, that’s another matter. When that time comes and they are really serious about it, our political leaders of the city would have to sit with the Mayor, I suppose. It’s not written in a book as to what is the process. But I’m sure that the DPM, along with the Minister of Tourism, who is the deputy leader of the party for the Eastern Division and the Chairman of the party, who are all residents of Belize City, I’m sure that they will have an input because it can affect them, either positively or negatively in the polls. Obviously the Council needs to work with the Area Representatives. It would be foolhardy if they don’t.”
