PM Mottley’s Party Wins 30 of 30 Seats

Mia Mottley

Now turning to regional news, the Barbados Labour Party, led by the Prime Minister Mia Mottley, was victorious in the Republic’s general election on Wednesday. The Barbados Labour Party defeated all its political opponents in a clean sweep to score its second victory at the polls with a historic thirty to zero parliamentary seats victory. This, just months after Barbados became a republic, removed the Queen as head of State and elected its first president. Known internationally for her outstanding leadership and personal charisma, PM Mottley addressed the people of Barbados at the Party’s Headquarters. Here is an excerpt of that victory speech.

Mia Mottley, Prime Minister, the Republic of Barbados

“When we need to go back to the people, and when we need to be able to allow the people in whom power resides, to make decisions about its future. It became clear to us, that the ability to prepare this nation for the challenges that we will face in the next ten to fifteen years, required that we give the people of this nation the option of choosing who we wanted to lead it into that process. We stand today on the morning of the twentieth of January confident that the people of this nation have spoken with one voice, decisively, unanimously, and clearly. We want each and every one of us to thank the people of Barbados for the confidents they continue to repose in us to be able to lead this country first to safety and then to prosperity.”
