Omicron Variant Officially Detected in Belize

While the COVID data for the past few weeks have indicated that the highly transmissible omicron variant is probably in Belize, today, News Five confirmed with Doctor Melissa Diaz-Musa that the variant has been detected via gene-sequencing by the Central Medical Laboratory. Based on the data, gathered, omicron entered the country just before Christmas, sometime after December twentieth.  Doctor Diaz-Musa also confirms that delta and omicron are now the dominant variants in Belize, but when persons are infected, it is not known which of the two they’ve contracted.

“Central Medical Lab has been able to carry our gene-sequencing for several months now and the last two or three batches of swabs gene-sequenced continued to show the predominance of delta. The swabs recently that were selected from December twentieth to January second, the results came back earlier this week and have showed that of the forty-two samples done, eighty three percent – I believe that it is thirty-five samples – presented omicron and the rest was delta. So we know that we are expecting a little bit in a week or so, further results from other swabs that are being gene-sequenced and we are expecting that the predominant remains as omicron at this point.”
