P.S.U. Says Sabido Has to Resign from Public Service before Taking up C.E.O. Post

Dean Flowers

In a one-on-one interview with News Five on Monday, P.S.U. President, Dean Flowers, confirmed that the appointment of Doctor Julio Sabido as C.E.O. in the Ministry of Health and Wellness is the purview of the Prime Minister and can be chosen from either the private or public sector. But, the union president says that with the appointment of a public officer, he or she must resign from public service to take on the role. If not, then taxpayers may be in for a surprise. As far as he knows, Doctor Sabido has not done so as yet, and Flowers is concerned that the government, and by extension the people of Belize, will end up paying money to Sabido even after he is no longer C.E.O.  In his explanation, Flowers alludes to the case of Candelaria Saldivar, who was still being paid by G.O.B. while at home and not reporting to work.

“Speaking about political appointees, we also need to look at what now becomes of the status of Doctor Sabido within the public service as a permanent established officer.  And I think, and this is just my view on things based on what occurred under the former administration, we need to ensure that he either relinquishes/resigns as a public officer or that he is placed on secondment and appointed as C.E.O. so that we do not go back to what we saw under the Barrow Administration where public officers who did not resign or retire – if it is that they reached the pre-retirement age – prior to being appointed and when you have a change in administration or a shuffle in cabinet, these people continue on the government payroll as C.E.O.s not doing any work as a C.E.O.  We note the notorious case of the former Minister of National Security Saldivar’s sister who we paid for over a year to just chill at home, while enjoying the benefits of C.E.O.”
