Health Minister: We’d like Dr. Manza to Stay

Michel Chebat

The new Minister of Health, Kevin Bernard, met with former Director of Health Services, Michel Chebat on Monday to discuss Manzanero’s possibly staying at the Ministry of Health. This is after, as you’ll remember, Manzanero was unceremoniously ousted by the former Minister of Health, after he turned down two other positions within the Ministry. Well, the new Minister would like him to reconsider – as he told News Five today— there are several senior posts open that Manzanero can aptly fill.

“I felt that it was important for me to meet with Dr. Manzanero. I did not know him personally. I’ve never met him personally. But I said I’m now the Minister of Health and Wellness. Let’s go in there with a different focus. Let’s go in there trying to mend fences and so I reached out to Dr. Manza over the weekend and I asked him if I could meet with him yesterday morning and so, of course he graciously accepted for us to meet. We met; we had a very frank discussion, I’ll tell you, a very cordial one. There was no commitment as in I give you a certain – I’m offering you x, y, or z but we laid the options on the table. We have to chart a new way forward as it relates to the Ministry of Health and what has been deemed out there as all sorts of in-fighting and so forth.  I’m not there for that. I think that just like everybody else believes too, I think that Dr. Manza, who is a doctor who contributed fifteen years of service to the public sector, to the Government of Belize, to the people of Belize, can contribute significantly to the work we want to do at the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Like I said to him, let’s turn a new leaf, let’s work together. I’m here to work with you. Are you prepared to work with me?”

“What was his reaction?”

Kevin Bernard

“He was very cordial. He said that once we can work together. I mean he’s committed to work. And he stated to me: “This is my passion; this is the work I do with love for the public.” So I’m prepared to work with anybody that’s prepared to work with me. At the end of the day, the focus is the health of our Belizean citizens.”

“There are two senior posts that are vacant that were created just the other day – Director of Hospital Services and Director of Health and Wellness. Do you see him possibly serving in any of those? Would you like to see him in any of those posts?”

Kevin Bernard

“Well there are other posts. I leave that decision after I consult. I believe that Dr. Manza can serve in many other capacities; not necessarily these two posts. There’s the post of Director of International Cooperation. I think that Dr. Manza at a senior level.”
