Minister Usher: No to Parking Meters, Yes to Green Fund

Henry Charles Usher

On Wednesday, you heard Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner speaking about a delay in a proposed parking meter project, which has been met with resistance by area reps in the Old Capital.  Among those persons is Fort George area representative Henry Charles Usher.  He is, however, supportive of the green fund initiative that would help with the perennial garbage woes of City Hall.

Henry Charles Usher, Area Rep., Fort George

“The amendment has to come in with parking meters themselves because we don’t have laws dealing with parking meters. But to actually start that process, it is just an approval that had to come in. I can’t say I support the thing. I know that the city council is seeing a decline in revenue and they are trying their best to see the services, the work done by the council continue. But at this time, I am not sure what revenue that will even generate. We have to look at unique ways. I was glad to hear the mayor speak about a green fund – I think that is very important. A fund that would be dedicated to cleaning and planting trees and chopping overgrown yards and stuff like that, and picking up the garbage and so on. I think that is an important development. It would be the first in this region to have a green fund for a municipality dedicated to the environment. So I hope that we could flesh that out a little more and certainly, I would support that initiative.”
