Elderly, Cardiovascular Patients, Diabetics and Others Urged to Stay Vigilant Even from “Milder” Omicron
Dr. Fernando Cuellar also said on Open Your Eyes that COVID-19 is here to stay, and people will need to have larger discussions about reopening the country. But at the same time, the same groups of older people or those with other health conditions remain at risk, even from Omicron that is often described as a “milder” form. He urges people in vulnerable groups to continue being vigilant and not let down their guard in the coming weeks.

“Overall, we should realize that we will have to live with this virus, no? Which translates into a lot of other discussions. Whether schools should be opening, whether our country should be reopening? We have to live with the virus. We have to be careful what, to divulge the correct information. But we also have to stress that in patients who are elderly, have diabetes, hypertension, obesity, renal condition, renal failure, the same list, heart disease, they still run the risk of ending up hospitalized, and by from omicron also. It’s something that is part of it. And just from the sheer numbers that we are having we expect to see more people hospitalized. And so its double whammy: we have more hospitalizations, and we have staff getting less so we have a mismatch. Big time. Over the next week or two.”
