Police Booth Installed in Back-a-Town Area, Dangriga
Among those who have been in dialogue with the department, sharing concerns over criminal activity in Dangriga is Mayor Robert Mariano. The former Deputy Commissioner of Police says that he reached out to the ComPol and his assisting with the installation of a booth in the hotspot area of Back-a-Town in an effort to have a grip on crime.
Robert Mariano, Mayor, Dangriga
“The police is saying that one of the things they would like to achieve today is have a booth in the Back-a-Town area and so police will be stationed in that area fulltime now and that will be around the clock. And so from two weeks ago, we have built a booth for that area and so as we speak we are fixing up the area and that booth will be there within about an hour time. I am telling Dangriga people that they are to expect police officers posted in that area and so if there is any need for assistance from the police to feel free to visit the booth to make reports and so on to the police. We are also expecting the police to do patrols in that area, those who will be posted in that booth.”
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“We are in dialogue with the mayor. The mayor has been generous and has given us a booth that is being installed within that area. I know that we are trying to get B.E.L. to put the lights on the booth, as well as to put lights in the dark areas within the Back-a-Town area because the dark area does poses some challenges for the police as well as the residents of that area. So once that is done, the police officers will occupy the booth, but in the time being, the police will be in the area to ensure that patrols are conducted. Another thing that I have done, I have directed Commander Operations to install a permanent operation presence in Dangriga which will include elements of the Special Patrols Unit and M.I.T. So they are now going to be a permanent feature of the Dangriga Police Detachment. And again, those officers while yes they are going to work in Dangriga and will answer to O.C. Dangriga, they will be most accountable to Commander of Operations to direct operations that needs to be done in different areas to go after the persons who are creating havoc in this community.”
